Working Together to Provide
Every Child Opportunities to Excel

Basketball

The CAN-DO basketball program is designed to develop a child’s athletic skills, create a sense of teamwork, and motivate athletes to work hard while having fun. We have partnered with the City of Tampa to create this year-round program for any child that has the desire to play basketball. The program is called Team Tampa Basketball. All skill levels are welcome to participate as we recognize that not every child will want to jump right into competitive basketball.

Our basketball program is designed for boys and girls ages 5 through 17. CAN-DO has created a curriculum that offers weekly training, summer camps, recreational leagues, and competitive tournaments. We even offer private training for athletes seeking more individualized instruction. All of these opportunities include basketball skill development, physical fitness, and educational mentoring.

Where and when do you play?

As a result of our partnership with the City of Tampa, we have access to seven basketball gyms located through the City of Tampa. We conduct clinics, leagues, tournaments, and camps in all locations.

Our competitive leagues offer players of any skill level the opportunity to put their basketball skills to work over the course of an 8-10 game schedule. Our leagues operate in winter (December thru February) and summer (July thru August) for boys and girls ages 5-17. The competitive leagues develop an athlete’s confidence and teach the importance of teamwork.

We are also proud to offer highly competitive travel teams that participate in AAU, USSSA, and YBOA sanctioned games. Our travel teams typically consist of players developed through the Team Tampa Basketball training programs. The travels teams compete in highly competitive tournaments and games consisting of very skilled players. There are additional costs to participate in the travel teams’ tournaments and scrimmages.

Team Tampa has also partnered with Hoop it Up to host indoor and outdoor basketball events.

Our Team

All of our instructors have a basketball background be it playing experience or coaching. Our coaches are required to participate in training programs and background screening to ensure that our athletes have the best possible instructors to develop their basketball skills.

What is the policy about playing time?

Playing time is determined by each coach. Team Tampa Basketball encourages that each player receive roughly equal playing time during the regular season of league games. This may vary due to a number of factors including attendance at practices, positional needs, competition, fouls, injuries and other factors. Players may play more in some games and less in others. During the playoffs of league games and the tournament season, coaches may "play to win," but all players are expected to meaningfully participate.

What happens if I don’t make a travel team?

If you don’t make a travel team, you will automatically be enrolled in our league program.

How are the travel teams determined?

Travel Teams have tryouts approximately 4 weeks before the season starts for grades 4-8 while the high school divisions have tryouts after the high school basketball season is over.

Are there any extra fees for travel?

There is additional cost of a travel uniform package which is approximately $150.00.

Are scholarships available?

Full and partial scholarships are available. Families needing scholarship help should speak to the coach or send an email to the Team Tampa director.

How much does it cost?

Each player must have a recreation card from the City of Tampa Parks and Recreation department. For players living in the city limits the annual fee is $15. If a player lives outside the city limit of Tampa the annual fee is $30. The monthly gym fee is $35.
